Quoting - the life blood of all printers

They say that if your not quoting your not winning work. This is true for all businesses but in printing the amount of processes and factors involved in 'putting ink on paper' is massively variable and machinery overheads can meaning winning or loosing a potential job on price alone.

If you didnt know in order to work out a printing price you must consider and have knowledge of the following basics:

1. Paper prices
2. Ink prices
3. Plate prices
4. Pre-press graphic design costs
5. Machine running costs
6. Labour costs
7. Finishing Costs
8. Courier or Delivery charges

You must bear in mind that each job is individual in each element and all change with one spec change in the job i.e. you may want a larger quantity. This simple request means more paper, more ink, more running time on the machine so more labour larger finishing costs and the end product will be heavier so the courier costs will change. But its not a simple case of 'pro-rata' most processes have a setup time so this is taken into account for each job so once that cost is covered the rolling cost is incremental, thus the unit cost reducing the more you have.

There are automated online quoting systems that run all the calculations (we use one ourselves) but most printers will tell you that it is still quicker to work out a price with a calculator and a scrap of paper :)

This section of the forum is dedicated to all those looking for help trying to get pricing correct or down to an art.

I look forward to your questions,

The Management
